Bill and Sara live in a unique and fascinating dome home built of reclaimed materials over 35 years ago. This 40 foot diameter dome, with about 2000 square feet of living space costs less than $100 for electricity annually. Its nestled into the shores of McIver Lake, and hosts an 8.1 kW ground mounted, grid-tied solar PV array which was installed in 2013. The solar PV system was designed and installed by Zenergy of Sebeka, MN.
The framing for the home was constructed from salvaged barn lumber fastened together with a hub made of recycled plow discs, and insulated with motorcycle packing materials. The primary source of heat is an antique wood-burning parlor stove, with electric base board as a back-up. Passive solar provides part of the heating with south oriented windows. As appliances ‘die’ Bill and Sara replace them with energy star and energy efficient models, including LED lighting. The site has a large organic garden that provides much of the produce. |
