This house was designed by Jay Isenberg, AIA, for a Minneapolis Green Homes North project. The house had requirements of fitting into the neighborhood fabric without looking like out of place. For about a 10% cost increase selected upgrades will bring the home to LEED Platinum. The NetZero features were designed and verified by Kitty Stratton (M.Arch).
The garage roof is home to a 3.56 kW grid-tied solar PV system, which is part of the Xcel Solar Rewards Program. Heating comes primarily from a small 9,000 BTU direct vent gas freestanding fireplace, though there is a MiniSplit Heat Pump, it is only turned on in the winter to keep the compressor functioning. But heating and cooling requirments are minimal due to the super-insulation and high quality winows. A new wall desgin provides R-52 Triple wall construction of mineral wool and Membraine barrier. Windows help with winter heating with SHGC 0.66 / U. 28 South facing double pane European style tilt and turns used also for natural ventilation and U 0.15 Triple pane tilt and turns on North East and West for daylighting and natural ventilation.
